Louis Armstrong is a hero. The man was a revolutionary musician and innovator. One of Time’s most influential people of the century, Satchmo was also a fervent cannabis activist. You may have seen pictures of him playing his trumpet, his cheeks billowing, or know his raspy voice and his thick trumpet chops. But he was at the beginning of cannabis activism in the United States, in the 1920s. He and his friends called themselves “vipers” and cannabis “gage.” From their commitment to the plant emerged the indelibly influential art form now known as jazz.
