The First Persian Empire

The First Persian Empire

The first Persian Empire is also known as the Achaemenid Empire. Cyrus the Great, who we spoke about last week, was the first great king of this empire. A distinctive trait of Cyrus the Great was his tolerance towards the diverse peoples he ruled over. The Achaemenid Empire was vast–stretching from India, in the east, all the way to Turkey, to the west. There were many religious and cultural practices among all those peoples. Cyrus the Great’s descendent, Darius I, also known as Darius the Great, invested tax money in public infrastructure. At that point, this was in roads and waterways. It is important to remember as well that all of this was happening in around 400 BCE. Cooperation and tolerance are old values.
