What is reality
Throughout history, humans have lived in many different worlds, each with their own models of reality. As modern Westerners, we can fall into the trap of seeing ancient civilizations as exotic, or primitive, or delusional. In truth, it’s our world that’s actually a little bit weird. Founded on the back of the scientific revolution, we champion capitalism and individuality. In this hierarchy so many things are lost.
We’re a bit arrogant – we think that our modern sciences offer the only true objective understanding of reality. We assume we are on the cutting edge of empirical knowledge and often fail to credit the first civilizations with what they understood.
This week, we’re going to dive into the worlds of the Athenians and the Incans to enliven our imaginations, understand ourselves better, and imagine other ways of being human.
